Every step in production is translated into a node, and the whole process is represented as a tree structure with all nodes. These nodes together describe the product patterns that need to be produced, and each individual node is defined according to input and output

jdf defines the whole production as a hierarchical structure, which runs through the whole digital production process, and the result is that all outputs are combined to produce the required products (as shown in Figure 1). JDF integrates each individual behavior into a whole system, so each element is defined as a part of the whole structure

JDF production process level

JDF work is composed of a series of nodes that describe each process required for product production. In addition to connecting to input and output devices, these nodes are also arranged in a hierarchical tree structure (as shown in Figure 2). They describe the components of the final product, just like the cover and content of a book. On the branch, the information content contained on the node is more specific. Each child node defines a series of features of the product, such as different media, different physical dimensions, or different color requirements. The middle node of the tree structure represents each operation group in production, and the bottom node represents a single independent process. For example, the two components of a print: cover and content, each of which has different requirements. In this way, we need to describe two different nodes of this task element, and there will be some black-and-white or color page information in the content page. Since the construction of each part requires a series of different processes, deeper structural expansion is necessary

JDF nodes of many output resources are JDF nodes of input resources. Many nodes can operate only after the input resources are completed and ready, that is, all nodes are implemented in a defined order, one operation after another. For example, to complete a plate making process in the printing process, you need to use the plate making machine information as the output resource. In a JDF work level organizational structure, the higher nodes of the tree structure represent some high-level and abstract operations, while the lower nodes refer to some specific and detailed process operations. To be more specific, the high node of the tree structure only represents the composition of the product, while the page node provides more specific guidance information for the device. In addition to the tree hierarchy in the node structure, nodes are connected into a process chain through their own resources. The completion of an output resource node represents the beginning of the next input resource. This connection is called a resource chain. Using the resource chain connection, the complex structure process is formed

in JDF, the connection of each process is not clearly defined. Nodes are arranged in abstract schedules and mandatory regulations. For example, overprint nodes must be in front of rip nodes, and these connections are arranged in the exchange of input and output. The appendages of resources form a shape structure, and the order of production process implementation can be selected from these appendages. A resource subsidiary may have many possible production processes, and then the information management system determines a reasonable method according to the constraints. Those who are responsible for writing JDF code in the information management system must fully understand these constraints. For example, how to complete the prepress process, the transmission distance between prepress and printing, the production capacity that the printing machine can bear, and how long it takes to complete this task must be taken into account. All these factors constitute the structure of the whole workflow

integration of information management system

it takes a lot of effort to make the equipment of different companies work together. Although people have realized the convenience brought by changeable coding languages, such as XML, it has not been widely used yet. In addition, some progress has been made in the connection process of printing production

mis (Management Information System) is mainly responsible for planning and arranging production, while product service is responsible for product operation. At present, their connection is not very effective. All listed plans and schedules, process results, production status and production tracking data and information must be transferred from production to MIS, so that subsequent processes can have information and provide some guidance

JDF accepts all MIS control and tracking mechanisms. JDF provides signal service between information management system and production. The results of each step of a work implementation are recorded in the work information, which facilitates each tracking. This structure also defines a series of standard documents, a format applicable to all information and a protocol that can be implemented by the device. In addition, it also provides a range of information capacity. When no information is selected, the console must check JDF to judge the actual production results. In addition to information capacity, JDF also includes different recorded information of each process, which can compare the plan with the actual results, providing convenience for managers to control production

the equipment in the production process can also support instructions. If the instruction function is selected, the console can directly terminate the current work, restart a work, or change the order of work. In addition to information, another function provided by JDF to the console is to collect the data of each process and transmit these information to the work tracking system through the work recording system

we can also choose to transfer the whole work to the work recording system, so that the recording system can calculate the cost of the whole work, and each single production process manager can choose parameters at will for their own work. JDF is a device independent standard. When the first version of JDF was studied, the four companies involved tried to transfer these specific controls to a device compatible with all systems. This ensures that all manufacturers can produce JDF systems, and there is no competition between manufacturers

JDF defines an information structure, including information format, information protocol and syntax format. JDF equipment uses these structures to complete the communication of different control systems. In this way, the system seller has a lot of flexibility about how to choose the control information structure and whether to provide annotation and control convenience. JDF provides a good opportunity for the integration of MIS system

in a word, JDF has established a device independent exchange platform based on XML standards for the printing and publishing field. No matter how complex the task is and how many manufacturers provide resources in production, it can build a bridge between each independent production field and from the moment the customer delivers the order to the completion of the product. This broad connectivity standard can also support e-commerce, automation, and computer-aided production and integration

however, the wide application of JDF in industry still depends on the joint efforts of many companies. They must be aware of the advantages of JDF in controlling production. JDF makes production control more transparent, which makes it convenient for customers to estimate the cost of completing the overall work. When manufacturers devote less energy to system collaboration and pay more attention to increasing the value of products, it will be helpful to the progress in the technical field
